Crab Apple, Flowering Crab Apple – Malus ‘Evereste’, Malus perpetu ‘Evereste’ (Rosaceae)

The Malus ‘Evereste’ is a wonderful small deciduous pleached fruit tree which has rightly earned the Award of Garden Merit as an ornamental tree by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993.

A compact tree for all seasons it produces a dazzling display of flowers which first arrive as dark purplish to red buds in April, bursting open in late April/May to produce masses of white cup shaped flowers. In fact, there are often so many, they obscure most of the foliage and branches around them. Dark green oval leaves measure 6-8cm turn a golden yellow hue in the autumn before dropping to the floor. Over the summer clusters of small (about an inch across) yellow orange to red apples develop. Decorating the tree beautifully they hang on to the branches well into the winter months often long after the leaves have fallen, providing a welcome colourful display. The fruit is excellent for making Crab Apple jelly and preserves and also used for cider making.

A versatile conical shaped tree with half open crown it grows to a height of 5-6 meters with a spread of 3-5meters on average. ‘Evereste’ are excellent pollinators loved by bees and birds and used extensively in orchards to do this work. It will grow in most soil types, but it prefers soils to be nutritious, moist, but well drained. Preferring full sun to produce the best blossom and fruit it also tolerates partial shade. Winter and frost hardy, it will happily grow in open spaces, but dislikes exposed windy sites and sea wind.

If you are looking for a small ornamental tree which tolerates paving and hard landscaping, then Evereste must be on the list. Disease resistant and pollution tolerant, this small ornamental tree is ideal for large and small gardens, tree containers, roof gardens, parks, squares and commercial settings. An extremely versatile plant the Malus ‘Evereste’ enjoys being managed in various forms, including multistem trees, standard trees, low pleached trees, arches and umbrella shape trees.
