Our Collection
Cloud Trees
Japanese-inspired cloud-pruned trees, shaped into sculptural forms with layered canopies and architectural presence. Our collection spans a wide range of species, forms, and sizes, from established specimens to more individual pieces.

Cloud trees are living structures developed over time through careful pruning and ongoing maintenance. Each specimen is considered a living work of art, bringing definition, character, and visual rhythm to a landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cloud trees — or Niwaki as they are known in Japan — are living works of art. Growers carefully select suitable young plants and then spend many years training, pruning and perfecting them into finished pieces of sculpture. Every single cloud tree we sell is unique. Some of the oldest cloud trees for sale at Hedgeworx can be well over 50 years old.
Popular species include Ilex crenata (Japanese Holly) — ideal for smaller cloud trees between 120cm and 250cm tall, with varieties like Convexa and Kinme often imported directly from Japan. Yew species such as Taxus cuspidata (Japanese Yew) and Taxus x media Hicksii make fantastic dense, evergreen clouds. Pine species including Pinus nigra (Austrian Pine) and Pinus parviflora (Japanese White Pine) offer more impact at larger sizes up to 4 metres. We also supply deciduous cloud trees in Green Beech and Copper Beech, plus Larch, Juniper and Cedar.
Most of our cloud trees are supplied in containers, which allows for delivery at any time of year. Only the biggest specimens are field-grown and can only be supplied with rootballs in the dormant months (autumn, winter and spring). We supply a large range of sizes from compact Ilex crenata specimens to very large field-grown Pines.
Cloud trees are delicate and need special care when transporting, delivering, unloading and planting — branches can be damaged if not handled correctly. For ongoing care, online advice from experts like Jake Hobson can help anyone quickly pick up the techniques needed for creative pruning.
