A great garden will always benefit from the inclusion of the classic shapes. The most reputable gardens of Britain have always featured significant use of topiary, as an integral part of their design and layouts. Although we have classed them as ‘normal shapes’, the quality and choice on offer from Hedgeworx is anything but normal.
The traditional plants are still the most popular. Box (Buxus sempervirens) and Yew topiary(Taxus baccata) have stood the test of time, and still can’t be beaten for training into impressive forms. Most of our clients still choose evergreen, for year-round interest, but we are offering an increasing range of deciduous options. As with all our plants, the root systems have been managed carefully over the years, with lifting and transplanting to their final destination in mind.
Balls are normally the first shape that springs to mind when thinking about popular shapes. Our topiary balls range from 30cm up to and above 250cm in diameter. We can supply evergreen ball shapes in Buxus, Taxus, Prunus lusitanica and Ilex crenata. We also offer deciduous options in Fagus sylvatica (Beech) and Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam).
Cylinders, like cubes look good if planted in groups or rows and lay the foundation fo impressive garden design. A classic shape that can fit into just about any plan. As the photograph opposite shows they are available in a wide range of sizes from just over a meter tall to 350cm and more.
Beehives are a good alternative to cylinders and in fact in recent years have become more popular in larger sizes. Beehives have a softer more natural shape and therefore tend to fit in both contemporary and more traditional gardens. Available from just over a meter tall to 400cm or even 500cm in height and 250cm wide we have a selection of sizes that will suit all spaces.
Cones are great statements to add height and structure to beds and borders. They are also useful for framing views, or as bookends for low hedges in parterres and knot gardens. Again, Buxus sempervirens (Box) and Taxus baccata (Yew cones) are the classic evergreen choices. Sizes range from 60cm in height, up to and above 5m tall. In addition to our evergreen topiary cones, we also offer deciduous options in Fagus sylvatica (Beech) and Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam).
Cubes are a more modern statement and a more popular choice in contemporary gardens. The clean lines and bold shapes make the plants really stand out. Buxus and Taxus are always the most popular choice the best choice foforr training into cubes, as the small leaves allow for tight clipping and clean, crisp lines.
Low domes are a relatively new design phenomenon. The effect is like no other, looking like an inviting pillow or soft cloud. Usually planted in groups of varying sizes, they truly offer a different and stylish look. Taxus baccata (Yew) has proven to be the best choice for this.
