View Stock & PricesThe Standard Sweet Gum Worplesdon is a clear-stemmed specimen of Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’, grown as a standard tree with a neat, conical crown. This selected cultivar is widely considered the most reliable Sweet Gum for UK conditions, consistently producing outstanding autumn colour even in cooler, less continental climates.
The deeply cut, star-shaped leaves are more finely lobed than the straight species, creating an elegant, textured canopy through summer. The autumn colour is exceptional — a long, reliable display progressing from golden-yellow and orange through to rich scarlet and deep wine-purple. 'Worplesdon' colours particularly well in the UK climate and is less dependent on specific soil conditions for good autumn performance than some Liquidambar cultivars.
Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ prefers moist, acidic to neutral soil and full sun. It has a tidier, more narrowly conical habit than the straight species, making it better suited to gardens and avenues where a more compact form is desirable. It is hardy and generally trouble-free once established, though alkaline soils should be avoided.
