Standard Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’) makes an elegant evergreen specimen tree with a clear stem and a full, rounded canopy of glossy, dark green foliage. The small, elongated dark green leaves are carried on distinctive dark red stems — a combination that gives Portuguese Laurel a richness and sophistication unmatched by many other evergreens. In early summer, the canopy is adorned with racemes of small, fragrant white flowers.

As a standard tree, Portuguese Laurel forms a neat, rounded canopy on a clear stem, making it ideal for formal gardens, courtyards, driveways, and avenue planting. The compact, dense crown provides year-round structure.

Portuguese Laurel is fully hardy throughout the UK and tolerates a wide range of conditions. It thrives in most soil types including chalk and clay, and is notably more tolerant of thin, chalky soils than Cherry Laurel. It performs well in sun or partial shade.
