Hedging Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’) creates a refined, dense evergreen hedge with glossy dark green foliage on distinctive dark red stems. It is widely considered one of the most attractive hedging species available, offering a more sophisticated appearance than Cherry Laurel while being notably more tolerant of thin, chalky soils.

When maintained as a hedge, Portuguese Laurel produces a dense, uniform screen with a naturally neat habit. The small, narrow leaves give a finer texture than other laurel species, and the red stems add subtle colour interest. In early summer, fragrant white flowers appear along the top of the hedge if not trimmed too early.

Portuguese Laurel is fully hardy throughout the UK. It thrives in most soil types including chalk and clay, and performs well in sun or partial shade. It handles coastal and urban conditions with ease.
